Major power system upgrade on the mountain during April
Details from Charles (Chuck) E. Ward, Jr., P.E.
Manager of Engineering Services
Central Virginia Electric Cooperative
The schedules below will depend on the difficulty of the work and weather conditions and could vary.
Beginning Monday, April 4, 2022, the construction crews and helicopter crews will be on Wintergreen mountain to start a major upgrade of the power lines running to the mountain.
Equipment, poles, etc. have will be staged across from the Discovery Ridge Adventure Center. The helicopter will also be coming in on Monday and will be landing in the grassy area also across from the Discovery Ridge Adventure Center.
During the weeks of April 4 and April 8, and at the beginning of the week of April 11, the crews will be removing the existing structures going up the mountain from the Peggy’s Pinch substation.
Toward the end of the week of April 11-15, the crews plan to start setting poles.
The helicopter will be transporting poles and equipment back and forth on almost a daily basis and this could last for approximately four months.
We have received approval to close the hiking trail that comes close to and crosses the transmission line for safety reasons.
The rebuilding of the transmission line will provide Wintergreen Resort and the community with much-improved reliability for many, many years to come. We are replacing the wood structures and cross-arms with iron poles and steel cross-arms.
