Developing the potential of Stoney Creek Park

Find a map, directions, and more details on the new park HERE

On its way to the James River, the water from Wintergreen mountain’s popular Shamokin Falls comes crashing down the mountain into what becomes the popular trout stream called Stoney Creek, which eventually forms the western boundary of Stoney Creek Park in Wintergreen’s Stoney Creek subdivision.

The park has long had picnic tables at both ends of a 0.9-mile trail (one end just off of Stoney Creek West and the other trailhead at the end of Wood Nettle Lane) that more or less runs alongside the stream, with a bench or two along the trail.

More park-like amenities are coming. Starting in the spring of 2021, the Wintergreen Property Owners Association started reworking the park’s northern entryway.

WPOA plans for this site include improving the parking area and moving it closer to the road, adding a new walking trail network, and putting in more picnic tables, and benches placed to enjoy the sights and sounds of the water rolling around the rocks. Other improvements, such as adding a small shelter, are being considered.

The park’s new flat trails with a crushed rock macadam surface will be designed for strolling. New, easier access points to the stream are being created for those looking to fish for trout or enjoy a cool place to go wading in the summer.

Most of the work is being done by WPOA’s staff. Mitchell Barker, WPOA's Infrastructure Director, says that this mostly forgotten park is a real gem and worthy of an upgrade, adding, “The parks, open spaces, trails, and paths in the community are a huge asset and worth celebrating.”

This was the concept map of the improvements to be made. The new parking lot off of Stoney Creek West will initially be smaller than shown here. The exact location of the trails, benches, and picnic tables are being determined on-site. This will be a multi-year project. The park will be closed until the end of April. [map]
