Using a cell phone to call 911? Remember to say - I'M AT WINTERGREEN!

Consider storing the direct number for Wintergreen Dispatch as a “favorite contact” in your cell phone. The number is 434-325-1106.

Cellular 911 calls within Wintergreen are tricky.

Within the past month, we have experienced a delayed response to 911 calls from within Stoney Creek because the cell call was routed to neighboring counties. Fortunately, the delays were slight and didn’t have an effect on the outcome of the call.

The Wintergreen 911 center can only receive landline 911 calls. Cellular 911 calls from Wintergreen are typically routed to Nelson County and Nelson can directly dispatch our resources without delay. With that being said, cellular systems do have overlap, and therefore it’s easy to imagine cellular 911 scenarios where the caller is within Nelson County, however the call is received by a different county.

There is a new national number for mental health emergencies. The Suicide and Crisis Lifeline number is 988 and it works anywhere in the United States.

If you dial 911 with a cell phone, you will likely hear “911, what are you reporting?” You should start your answer with the words “I am at Wintergreen.”

911 was created so that citizens would never have to look up the number for emergency services. It has worked. Virtually every man, woman, and child knows 911. We can’t recommend any number other than 911.

You may choose to store the direct number for Wintergreen Dispatch as a “favorite contact” in your cell phone. The number is 434-325-1106. Our Wintergreen Police dispatchers answer this line 24/7.

From WPOA updated with a
link to details on Officer Wagner:

Wintergreen Property Owners,

This is an incredibly difficult message to share with our Wintergreen community.

Last night, June 16, at approximately 10 pm, the Wintergreen Police Department was dispatched to an emergency call at a residence in the community. A Wintergreen Police Officer who responded was allegedly shot and killed during a struggle with an individual staying at the residence. The suspect was immediately taken into custody. This appears to have been an isolated incident, with no threat to the larger community. No other Wintergreen Police Officers were injured during the course of the incident. We appreciate the response and assistance of the Nelson County Sheriff's Office, the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office, the Virginia State Police, and Wintergreen Fire & Rescue.

It is extremely difficult to wrap our arms around this immeasurable tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the officer's family, and his WPOA family. In the coming days and weeks, we will grieve and support one another. We will work through the difficult task of trying to understand what happened, support his family, as well as his family of first responders.

Please do not call the Wintergreen Police Department or Gatehouse for additional information. We will continue to provide updates via the Alert Wintergreen system and the Wintergreen Police Department will post updates on its Facebook page at www.facebook.com/wintergreenpolice. We ask that you respect the privacy of the family and our staff.

All media inquiries and updates concerning the ongoing criminal investigation will be handled by the Virginia State Police.

WPOA Survey of Property Owners 2022: Summary Reports

Karen Asher, President
Wintergreen Property Owners Association

First of all, I am pleased to report there was a high level of response to the Wintergreen Property Owners Association’s December survey of its members. This single statistic–40% of all 3,549 households–clearly says Wintergreen is a community full of caring and engaged individuals. That’s not news but it was wonderful to see it plainly documented…. continues here.
