Firefighters create a new type of volunteer

Last year the Wintergreen Fire Department created a new level of fire volunteer to support their operations. The response was impressive. There are twelve new volunteers from the valley. There is an effort now to recruit mountain residents into the program.

Called the Fire Auxilliary Volunteers, these men and women perform vital assistance to the department but does not require the high level of training, physical effort, or time is required of Wintergreen's volunteer firefighters.

The auxiliary maintains a stock of food and supplies to provide immediate support to the firefighters and responders and is ready to respond 24-hours-a day, 365-days-a year.  They also provide food and drink at training sessions and meetings when needed.

The auxiliary has three different tiers:

Tier 1: Planned training sessions or meetings on the property.

Tier 2: Tier 1 duties and on-scene support of emergencies, either on the property or off the property.

Tier 3: Tier 1 and 2 duties along with on-scene support of gathering equipment, traffic control, and equipment restocking at the station after a call or training.
